NEP – 2020 is a breath of fresh air in a mismanaged space that is the Indian schooling sector. But, there is a long way to go in terms of execution. Historically, Indians have always lacked the doing part. Ideation has always been our strong suit.

Indian is biiig, diverse country. It is clear that copying stuff won’t work. We tried that for the last 73 years with the borrowed system from the British. What we need is a customised framework that handles the issues of Bharat at scale. 

We must address two issues first:

• For-profit School: Schools have to be allowed to be for-profit so that there is a keen interest from the private sector. Without private, the amount of work that needs to be done will take another 2-3 decades.
• Independent Inspection Bureau: A big issue concerning the learning outcome is the evaluation of the performance of schools, both public and private. To make this work, an independent bureau must be set up (and funded well) that can collect data and evaluate students and schools alike on their performance.

There are a lot many areas where we can make improvements. It’s all about starting up. The more we execute on these fronts, the better we will get.

At last, Education is not a task we can leave for the next generations to handle. This must be the priority for every generation to find what’s wrong in the present and fix that. I am confident, we won’t fail.
